About
Welcome to the story of building the Appalachian Southern, an N scale model railroad. My goal for this effort is to produce an online journal which depicts construction of the layout from start to finish. The layout is being built in a spare room in my office which measures 15′ x 25′. My office is within walking distance of my home which is very convenient.
I am married to my wonderful wife Stephanie. I also have a daughter named Tindall from a previous marriage. She is a very smart girl and wants to be just like her dad. We have a three year old black lab named Neala who you will see every now and then in my photos. Normally Neala is with me all day in the office.
I own and operate Hutchinson Enterprises, Inc. We have been in business since 1982. I graduated from Clemson University in 1996 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. I worked for many years as an engineer before joining the family business. In the past, I have worked in automotive parts manufacturing where I designed automation control systems for manufacturing equipment. I also worked in a nuclear power plant for two years during the Y2K transition. That was really fun. I picked up all of my woodworking skills from my father who is a fine craftsman. Dad is retired now and spends his days fishing on Lake Murray in Lexington, SC. He comes home every so often to check up on the business and make sure I haven’t converted the entire office into a model train layout.
I have a few other hobbies that keep me busy. I am a student of the classical guitar. I do try to practice at least one hour every day. What a great stress reliever. Not only does it relax me, but I feel it improves my memory and hand/eye coordination. I am also in the middle of a three year project involving a frame-up restoration of a 1986 Jeep CJ7. I will post some pics on the blog at some point. Photography is another hobby I enjoy and it provides many hours of enjoyment. Photography is a useful hobby to have when you maintain a website.
